Syntax-Brillian Corporation Provides Quarter-end Outlook and Updates Calendar-Year Revenue Guidance

TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Syntax-Brillian Corporation (Nasdaq:BRLC - News), one of the fastest-growing manufacturers of HDTVs, today provided updated information with respect to its results for the quarter ended June 30, 2007 and updated revenue guidance for the calendar year ending December 31, 2007.

"In our quarterly earnings release on May 10, 2007, we provided revenue guidance for the quarter ended June 30, 2007 of $190 million to $210 million on unit volumes of 240,000 to 270,000 units," said Wayne Pratt, Syntax-Brillian's Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. "While the results of the quarter have not yet been finalized, we believe that revenue for the quarter will be within that range. Additionally, we believe that gross margins will be within or above the top half of the range of 15% to 17% that we had previously forecasted.

"Moreover," said Pratt, "during the quarter ended June 30, 2007, we collected $129.6 million of cash from South China House of Technology, our Asian distributor, and as of June 30, 2007 there were, as expected, no invoices outstanding for more than the stated 120-day terms. Finally, we continue to experience strong demand for our products and have had success penetrating additional retail accounts during the first half of 2007. As a result of this strong demand and the deployment of the proceeds of our public stock offering in May as well as the cash from the accounts receivable collections, we are raising our revenue outlook for the calendar year ending December 31, 2007 from our previous range of $950 million to $1.1 billion to a revised range of $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion."

Syntax-Brillian expects to report its financial results for the quarter and fiscal year ended June 30, 2007 no later than the second week of September.

Final membership in the index will be announced on June 25, 2007.

Membership in the Russell 3000, which remains in place for one year, means automatic inclusion in the large-cap Russell 1000® Index or small-cap Russell 2000® Index as well as the appropriate growth and value style indexes. Syntax-Brillian: Rebound Day For Maker Of Cheap Flat-Panel TVs

Syntax-Brillian (BRLC) shares have been battered over the last few days following Sony’s (SNE) disclosure that it plans to offer a line of lower-priced LCD televisions for Wal-Mart (WMT), Target (TGT) and other discount stores. In the week’s first three sessions, Syntax-Brillian shares dropped $1.44, or 24%.

Also pressuring the stock: a report that Syntax-Brillian might stop selling through Circuit City (CC), and concerns that the company could be subject to an FCC fine for importing televisions that do not comply with new regulation on digital television reception capability.
The stock is on the mend today, however, as BRLC bulls rally to the company’s defense. Merrill Lynch’ s Steve Fox today repeated his Buy rating on the stock, and said investors to “stay focused on robust unit demand trends, especially in the second half of calendar year, a richer mix of business (e.g., more large size TVs), and the likelihood that receivables improve during the June quarter.”

On the FCC issue, Fox says that the risk of a potential FCC fine was discussed in BRLC’s most recent prospectus; he says management has been in discussions with the FCC on this issue for a number of months. Fox thinks the fine will be $2-3 million, of which two-thirds should be subsidized by BLRC’s component suppliers. “BRLC is likely to enter an appeals process with the FCC and we do not think this issue is specific to BRLC alone,” he writes.
As for the Sony issue, he says the concerns are overblown. He thinks the new Sony models will be priced $100-$200 above comparable Syntax-Brillain models.

Today, Syntax-Brillian shares have rebounded 54 cents, to $5.10.

ADDENDUM: CIBC’s Daniel Gelbtuch also came to the company’s defense today, repeating his Sector Outperform rating. He contends that both the assertion that BRLC will be out at Circuit City and concerns that Sony’s deal with Wal-Mart will hurt the company are “way, way off.”
Gelbtuch says the concerns about Circuit City are simply wrong.

Gelbtuch says that at 4x his 2008 EPS estimate of $1.10 a share, the stock as of last night’s close was trading at a “ridiculously low” valuation. “We would be aggressive buyers on what we see as ignorance-fueled weakness,” he writes.

Syntax-Brillian Rebounded From Day-Ago Plunge, Analysts Say Concerns Unfounded

NEW YORK (AP) -- Syntax-Brillian Corp. rose in early trading Thursday after analysts dismissed a day-old rumor that the company might stop key sales to a major vendor.
Shares of the Tempe, Ariz.-based company jumped 53 cents, or 11.6 percent, to $5.09, following a 16.5 percent plunge Wednesday.

The Wednesday selloff was prompted by an analyst note that said the company may stop selling its liquid crystal display high-definition televisions to Circuit City Stores Inc. The company responded by saying it remains committed to Circuit City.

On Thursday, Robert W. Baird & Co. analyst Tristan Gerra in a client note reiterated an "Outperform" rating with a $15 target price on shares, saying concerns over the company's Olevia-branded LCDs are unfounded.

The analyst said the company's LCDs outsell competitors' at Circuit City, while distribution of the Olevia product is likely to grow ahead.

"We continue to believe the distribution of Olevia TVs will continue to expand at new and existing retailers in the U.S., Asia, and Europe in the second-half of this year, as demand for the Olevia brand continues to be strong," wrote Gerra.

CIBC World Markets Corp. analyst Daniel M. Gelbtuch in a client note also said the concerns "are way, way off."

"We believe Monday's pressure was due to another competitor's suggestion that Sony's intent to sell entry-level LCD-TVs at Wal-Mart will likely damage Olevia's competitive position," wrote Gelbtuch. "We believe Sony's cost/markup structure will not compete with Olevia, nor is Wal-Mart a Syntax-Brillian customer."

Syntax-Brillian Shares Plunge After Analyst Says Shipments to Circuit City May Stop

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Syntax-Brillian Corp. plunged Wednesday after a C.E. Unterberg, Towbin analyst said the company may stop selling its liquid crystal display high-definition televisions to Circuit City Stores Inc.

Syntax-Brillian, the only U.S.-based manufacturer of LCD televisions, responded in an e-mailed statement that the company "is fully committed to Circuit City."

Tempe-Ariz.-based Syntax-Brillian shares dropped 90 cents, or 16.5 percent, to close at $4.56. The stock has traded between $2.11 and $11.70 in the past 52 weeks.

Analyst John Vinh said in a client note rival Proview International Holdings Ltd., which makes Polaroid brand LCD TVs, told him Circuit City approached them asking for increased shipments, because Syntax-Brillian may have "decommitted" from the retailer. He said a second competitor, Proton Electronic Industrial Co., also said it will begin shipping to Circuit City stores later in the year.

Vinh said the comments indicate that Syntax-Brillian will exit Circuit City stores by 2008.
The company denied the report. "We currently are shipping Olevia LCDs and remain fully committed to our retail partners through calendar year 2007," said Syntax-Brillian in an e-mailed statement.

Vinh said an exit from Circuit City should not put company's bottom line at risk due to high demand from other retailers. The analyst predicted the company will expand into another large big-box store later this year, possibly Best Buy.

Syntax-Brillian Brings in $143.3M in Proceeds From 29.4M Share Offering

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Syntax-Brillian Corp., which makes high-definition televisions, said Wednesday it closed a public offering of 29.4 million shares of its stock for proceeds of about $143.3 million.

Selling shareholders received about $16.3 million, Syntax-Brillian said.

Under the offering, the company sold the shares for $5.75 each, and the underwriters exercised 3.8 million shares under their overallotment option.

Syntax-Brillian said it used about $20.2 million of the proceeds to pay back its debt and plans to use the rest to fund its business expansion, as well as for other general corporate objectives.

Merrill Lynch & Co. served as book-running manager for the offering, and UBS Investment Bank worked as co-lead manager. Co-managers for the offering were Robert W. Baird & Co., Canaccord Adams and Brean Murray, Carret & Co., the company said.

Shares of the company added 27 cents, or 4.4 percent, to $6.36 in aftermarket activity, after closing down 21 cents at $6.09.

At $3,500, the Olevia 747i 47-inch LCD HDTV is priced competitively with other high-end LCDs in its size range.
